On May 10, 2008 the Rocket City Mustang Club of Huntsville, AL hosted the "28th Annual Mustang and All-Ford Powered Show". The show site, once again, was the Sears parking lot at Madison Square Mall in Huntsville. A warm breeze and a partially sunny sky greeted all the participants. Nearly 180 cars filled the available spaces and event coordinators had to park entrants in-between show aisles by mid-morning. It was estimated that several thousand spectators perused the fine displays which ranged all years, concourse to daily drivers, specialty cars and trucks, and a few "one-off" entries. Mustangs and FoMoCo entrants from Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Memphis, and other cities within a one-day drive were scattered throughout the field.
"This was the first big show this year in North Alabama and the potential was there for this size crowd .....even still, you begin to worry whether everything will go as smoothly as planned," said the show chairman and club president (Mike Liston). "RCMC members worked so hard ever since last November for this one-day event, but the pay-off was obvious....we surpassed last year by nearly 50 cars!....and each committee was handled so well, I pretty much got to just ride around on my scooter and just keep out of their way...and I'm sure they appreciated that (laughing)".
The annual Mother's Day weekend show kicks off the club's year which is filled with participating in local/regional shows, two parades, rallys, cruise-ins, and other car (and family) events. "We are definitely a family-oriented club and try to focus our outings with that in mind...including active members and their spouses/children, we have well over 150 in our club family," Liston said, "In fact, we actually gained 17 new members who signed up at the show!"
The annual show would not have been possible if not for the high enthusiasm of club members, but also the wonderful sponsors and vendors that played a significant role. Local dealership Woody Anderson Ford and Sears Automotive Center are annual cornerstones, but other great national and local supporters "ponied up" as well. "As a surprise, I worked with Ford Performance to bring their show rig, cars, and parts display....when you came to the show, there was this large FORD RACING truck to greet everyone, said Liston, "This show had a little bit of everything, yet several members and I are already thinking to next year so look out!" In all, nearly 135 plaques were awarded along with numerous give-aways. RCMC will provide a significant portion of the funds raised to support local charities. "We're blessed with the ability to have great cars, families, etc. so we just want to give back to the community....that's what we do."
