The Mustang Club of America held it's 30th anniversary "Stampede" celebration at the Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Alabama Labor Day weekend August 31-September 3, 2006. The event was hosted by the Magic City Mustang Club of Birmingham.
About 1000 Mustangs converged on the location. Many vendors were present with their wares on display and the track was available for high speed excitement.
My son and I headed down from Huntsville Saturday morning. We met up with Patrick and Skip in Hartselle and caravaned together. Upon arrival, we checked with at the registration building and received our show parking spot assignment and a box of goodies. Registration was handled well and flowed smoothly.
We proceeded into the beautiful park grounds and found our way to our assigned spot. Parking spots were assigned on a first come-first served basis and we wound up parked beside a nice Shelby convertable.
As the morning wore on, it got really warm. I mean hot, wow was it hot.
We wandered down to the paddock area where we met Mark, Eric, Art, and Randy (Midlife). Mark, Eric, and Art had been there since Thursday and spent much of that time on track. Mark's Bullit had performed well and he had terrified his passengers. Unfortunately, Eric had blown a head gasket on his 347 stroker motored 67 fastback and Art had broken a roll-pin in the distributor of his 351 powered 1967 trans-am style coupe.
After that we checked out the observation deck on the Race Control building. From this vantage point we could see a lot of the show field as well as the on-track action. In addition it was shaded and had a good breeze which gave us a break from the heat.
There was a pair of trolleys that were circulating the track and made it easy for spectators to move from the parking lot, to the show area, and get to various obserservation points. When we decided to see more of the track, it was only a matter of catching a trolley and riding out to your selected spot.
While walking through the show field we came across the Hammonds and the Whisnants. The Hammonds were spectating while the Whisnants had entered both cars and were checking out the competition.
This show was a great opportunity to see collections of Mustangs that you don't normally see. First of all were the Black Mustang Club and Yellow Mustang club. Then there were a nice group of Bullits, and a row of Mach 1's that streched as far as the eye could see. I've never seen so many Mach 1's of all generations parked in one place.
Of particular interest were the Special Service Package Mustangs. i.e. police cars. They represented state police cars from Florida, California, Georgia, Origon, Missouri, Texas, Michigan, Arizona, and Oklahoma.
All in all, it was a great event and we had a good time. Hats off to the Majic City Mustang Club.
